HC Deb 12 March 1991 vol 187 cc479-80W
1990. Mr. Darling

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the total amount paid(a) by airlines and (b) by ferry operators under the Immigration (Carriers' Liability) Act 1987 in each month of 1990: and how much remains outstanding in unpaid penalties in respect of notices served in (a) 1988, (b) 1989 and (c)

Mr. Peter Lloyd

The accounting system does not differentiate between airlines and ferry operators; the analysis requested could only be obtained at disproportionate cost. The total amount paid by all carriers in each month of 1990 was as follows:

£
January 234,000
February 198,000
March 368,000
April 59,000
May 339,000
June 250,000
July 202,000
August 221,000
September 210,000
October 415,000
November 670,000
December 241,000
Total 3,407,000

The following amounts remain outstanding in respect of notices served in each of the following years:

£
1988 1,203,000
1989 2,201,000
1990 5,943,000

Mr. Darling

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will indicate(a) how many notices were served under the Immigration (Carriers' Liability) Act 1987, (b) in how many cases representations were made and (c) in how many cases discretion was exercised.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

The total number of notices issued to carriers (for example airlines and sea operators) to 31 January 1991 was 26,604. Representations were made by carriers to the ports in 7,179 cases. Discretion was exercised in 5,627 cases, either as the result of written representations made by carriers after receipt of a notice or on subsequent review at immigration service headquarters.
