HC Deb 12 March 1991 vol 187 cc476-7W
Dame Jill Knight

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make a statement on how he intends to ensure that offenders who are a persistent danger to women receive tougher sentences.

Mr. John Patten

The Criminal Justice Bill strengthens the court's powers to protect the public from persistent violent and sexual offenders. Courts will be able to impose a custodial sentence or a longer one than justified by the seriousness of the offence upon a sexual or violent offender who poses a risk of serious harm to the public. They will also be able to order longer and more intensive supervision for sex offenders following their release from custody or when they are sentenced to a community penalty.
