HC Deb 11 March 1991 vol 187 c392W
Mr. Amos

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what plans his Department has to help smokers give up smoking on No Smoking Day; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Hanley

The Health Promotion Agency and health and social services boards are responsible for promoting good health in Northern Ireland. They are involved with other organisations in drawing public attention to No Smoking Day and the hazards of smoking, in encouraging smokers to stop on that day, and in assisting and supporting those who wish to give up smoking altogether. I was pleased to launch the campaign leading up to No Smoking Day recently. Other initiatives being taken include the widespread distribution of material, the provision of clinics to help smokers give up the habit and the organisation of numerous local events throughout Northern Ireland to promote No Smoking Day.
