HC Deb 08 March 1991 vol 187 cc311-2W
Mr. Andrew Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what is the total number of students attending all designated courses for student loans who are potentially eligible for student loans in Northern Ireland.

Dr. Mawhinney

[holding answer 7 March 1991]: The most recent estimate for the academic year 1990–91 of the number of students domiciled in Northern Ireland who are eligible for a loan is 27,000.

Loan-bearing courses do not require designation if they are at institutions receiving support from public funds.

The Department of Education for Northern Ireland may designate as loan-bearing courses of higher education at other institutions under regulation 4 of the Education (Student Loans) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1990.
