To ask the Secretary of State for Employment what proportion of those employed in his Department are disabled.

Mr. Jackson

The Employment Department Group employed 3.2 per cent. registered disabled staff at 1 June 1990, which is the latest available figure. The group also employs people with disabilities who have chosen not to register. The group complies with the code of practice on the employment of people with disabilities issued by the Office of the Minister for the Civil Service, and aims to increase the representation of those with disabilities especially at higher grades. The group as an employer has adopted the disability symbol it recently launched.
