HC Deb 20 June 1991 vol 193 c262W
Mr. Wigley

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations he has made to the Government of Burma concerning the house arrest of the General Secretary of the National League of Democracy, Aung San Suu Kyi.

Mr. Lennox-Boyd

We have frequently urged the Burmese military authorities (the SLORC) to put an end to violations of human rights, in particular the detention of members of the National League for Democracy who won over 85 per cent. of votes cast in democratic elections held in Burma on 27 May 1990. The Secretary of State wrote to the chairman of the SLORC on 6 July 1990, and statements were made on 7 September 1990 and 28 May 1991. The Secretary of State also made a statement at the EC/ASEAN Foreign Ministers meeting in Luxembourg on 30 June. We were also associated with an 18-nation demarche on 21 September last year, and with EC statements on 4 January and 27 May 1991.
