HC Deb 18 June 1991 vol 193 c149W
Mr. Butler

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what is his latest estimate of the number of HIV positive individuals in the populations.

Mrs. Virginia Bottomley

At the end of 1990, 13,292 laboratory reports of HIV-antibody positive tests in England, Wales and Northern Ireland had been received. Since this figure is based on persons who request an HIV test and proceed with the test after being counselled it represents an under-estimate of the total number of infected persons.

The Day report, "Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome in England and Wales to end of 1993" published by the Public Health Laboratory Service in January 1990 provided an upper estimate of the number of HIV infected persons in England and Wales at the end of 1990 of 46,500, a copy of the report is available in the Library.
