HC Deb 13 June 1991 vol 192 c647W
Mr. Simon Hughes

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is his department's latest estimate of the number of qualified teachers who are not currently teaching.

Mr. Fallon

[pursuant to his reply, 21 May 1991, c. 423]: In March 1988 there were estimated to be 385,000 qualified teachers aged under 60 who were not in regular teaching service. This total includes all those who had previously taught or been trained in England and Wales, except for those who were in full-time or part-time teaching service in the maintained or non-maintained sector in England and Wales, or had retired from teaching.
