HC Deb 13 June 1991 vol 192 cc641-2W
Mr. Pawsey

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many days have been lost by teachers through strike action for each of the past 11 years; and what was the number of children affected.

Mr. Fallon

Information on days lost by teachers due to strike action and on the number of children affected by such action is not centrally recorded by the Department. However, figures for the United Kingdom provided by the Department of Employment show the following numbers of days lost due to strikes by all employees in nursery, primary, secondary and special schools, including both teachers and non-teaching staff:

Days lost
11980 127,880
11981 45,364
11982 97,241
1983 19,455
1984 248,414
1985 851,518
1986 315,064
1987 133,429

Number of in-patients and day cases treated 1979 to 1989–90

Camberwell HA 37,478 46,262 23

The number of NHS beds authorised for use by private patients is not a measure of private patient activity. These beds are also available to health service patients and are not particular beds reserved for the exclusive use of private patients. Reliable information about the number of private patients treated is not available centrally.

Days lost
1988 27,658
1989 1,300
1990 30,370
1 Figures for 1980–82 also include employees in further and higher education establishments.
