HC Deb 12 June 1991 vol 192 c561W
Mr. Hannam

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what recent representations he has received from the ANC on sporting links with South Africa; and what response he has made.

Mr. Hurd

The ANC has recently sought the British Government's support for the readmission of South Africa to the International Cricket Council. In reply we have welcomed the formation this month of one non-racial United Cricket Board of South Africa. I have explained to the ANC that the Government do not control sport in this country, but that I was sure that the ICC would wish to take account of this development. Under the United Cricket Board, cricket in South Africa will comply with the terms of the Gleneagles agreement and should resume its place in international sport. I hope that very soon South Africa will be re-admitted to international cricket. As other sports become non racial, the same will apply to them.
