§ Mrs. ClwydTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what action the United Kingdom executive director at the World bank is taking to ensure adequate compensation is paid to those people displaced by the Kedung Ombo dam in central Java; what estimates he has of the number of people still living in the dam area; and whether Her Majesty's Government were represented at the opening of the dam on 18 May.
§ Mrs. ChalkerCompensation is essentially a matter between those concerned and the Government of Indonesia. Reliable estimates of numbers are difficult to come by, but I understand that some 5,000 families have accepted compensation and moved, and that 500–600 families remain in the green belt around the Kendung Ombo dam area. Her Majesty's Government were not represented at the opening of the dam.
