To ask the Minister for the Civil Service what percentage of women are now employed in grades 1 to 7 of the civil service.

Mr. Renton

On 1 April 1990, the latest date for which figures are available, 9.7 per cent. of staff in grades 1 to 7 were women. This compares with 4.5 per cent. in 1984 when the programme of action to achieve equality of opportunity for women was launched.
