Mr. McGrady

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what has been the budgetary allocation to the road transport licensing scheme in each year since 1 April 1986.

Mr. Needham

Expenditure on road transport licensing in Northern Ireland in the financial years 1988–89, 1989–90 and 1990–91 was £388,686, £405,362 and £448,123 respectively. Expenditure details for earlier years are not readily available and could be produced only at disproportionate cost. The budgetary allocation for 1991–92 is £470,000.

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many hauliers are registered with the road transport licensing scheme.

The number of hauliers holding current road freight operators' licences in Northern Ireland was 1,515 at 31 May 1991.
