HC Deb 06 June 1991 vol 192 c341W
Mr. Martyn Jones

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what efforts the British Government have made to prevent other nations from hunting whales for commercial reasons.

Mr. Curry

At the recent meeting of the International Whaling Commission the United Kingdom continued to play a leading role in ensuring that the moratorium on commercial whaling was upheld. Further, requests for catch quotas by Iceland and Japan were turned down, resolutions were passed against the research whaling plans of Japan and the USSR and ensuring a follow-up to a report on the status of small cetacean populations. At the United Kingdom's suggestion a special review will be undertaken on the humaneness of whale killing methods, an issue about which we are particularly concerned.
