Mr. Dewar

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will publish a table showing expenditure on regional preferential assistance to industry in each standard region in England for each year from 1974 to the latest year for which figures are available in cash and constant prices.

Information on regional preferential assistance has been collated only since 1978–79. Following are tables showing the amounts of regional preferential assistance in each standard region in England from 1978–79 to 1989–90—the latest year available-expressed in current prices and 1989–90 prices.

5 Expenditure on a 1989–90 price basis for each year is calculated by applying the appropriate deflator to expenditure at current prices.
6 Includes expenditure in Cumbria, otherwise shown within the totals for Northern Region.

The items included in the expenditure are Regional Development Grants, Regional Selective Assistance and Regional Enterprise Grants; expenditure on Land and Factories by the English Industrial Estates Corporation.
