Mr. Sheerman

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what difficulties are experienced by probation hostels in obtaining rent from residents as a result of the ineligibility of 17-year-olds to receive income support; and what action he intends to take to resolve this problem.

Mr. John Patten

Some probation hostels have reported difficulties in obtaining rent from 17-year-olds. We are considering this matter further with relevant other Government Departments.
