§ Mr. FavellTo ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is his latest estimate of the cost of the implementation of European Community draft directive document No. 8460/90 on data protection to(a) the Exchequer (i) directly and (ii) channelled via the European institutions, (b) industry and (c) the British consumer.
§ Mrs. RumboldWe are considering how best to estimate direct costs to the Exchequer, to industry and to British consumers of implementation of the draft directive. The Commission has estimated that the costs of two committees established under the directive would be £39,136 per annum from 1993. I cannot yet say what the whole cost to the Exchequer might be.
In practice the actual United Kingdom contribution to the EC budget for individual programmes will depend not only on the level of expenditure, but the level and timing of payments, and the relative shares of the programme.
