§ 39. Mr. David Marshall
To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many heart operations have been carried out privately in NHS hospitals in Scotland in the last 10 years; what is the total cost involved; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Michael Forsyth
Statistics on heart operations carried out privately in NHS hospitals are not held centrally. Since central funding for major cardiac surgery began in 1983, the number of operations performed in Scotland has increased from 1,970 to 2,705 by December 1990.
