HC Deb 15 July 1991 vol 195 cc32-3W
Mr. Win Griffiths

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many pupils with special needs were in schools and colleges, by year group, from five to 18 years in each of the last five years.

Mr. Fallon

The table shows the numbers of pupils with special needs in schools and colleges in England for the academic years 1985–86 to 1989–90, the latest date for which information is available.

Mr. Win Griffiths

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make it his policy to give local education authorities a statutory duty to provide places in full time education for pupils with special needs up to 18 years of age at least.

Mr. Fallon

At present, local education authorities are required to secure the provision of suitable full-time education for pupils up to the age of 18, including those with special educational needs. For 16 to 18-year-olds, the Government intend that this duty will transfer to further education funding councils for England and Wales in a new independent further education sector. Our plans are set out in the White Paper "Education and Training for the 21st Century", Cm. 1536.

Mr. Win Griffiths

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will publish a list of all secondary schools in each local authority area which have integrated units or other provision for children with special needs, together with their funding requirements under local management of schools; and whether each integrated unit, or other provision, receives all of the funding allocated to it under the local management of schools formula.
