§ Mr. SoleyTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he will set out the basis for selection of the local authorities to be invited to submit bids in the second round of city challenge and the criteria he will use to assess the bids submitted.
§ Mr. PortilloOur present intention is that those authorities which currently have urban programme status will be eligible to participate in the second round of city challenge. We shall draw on the experience gained in this year's pacemaker exercise to determine the criteria for assessing the bids in the second round.
§ Mr. SoleyTo ask the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he will provide details of the sources of funding for the city challenge scheme in subsequent years and set out the impact of these funding arrangements on the existing urban programme administered through local authorities, as a whole, and on the individual allocations of local authorities.
§ Mr. PortilloNo decisions have yet been taken about the extent and timing of future competitions, beyond the present intention to hold a further competition in 1992 and so to distribute more of the Government's resources for inner cities on a competitive basis.
