To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what plans he has to increase the numbers of Inland Revenue inspectors to ensure that all guest houses which should register for uniform business rates are encouraged to do so.

Mr. Maude

There are no plans to increase the numbers of Inland Revenue staff specifically to deal with this matter. However, Her Majesty's Government aim to ensure that staff will be maintained at the level required to enable the valuation office to carry out its statutory duties.
