To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many people were employed in Tower Hamlets in each year since 1979.

Employment estimates for local authority districts are available only from the censuses of employment taken in 1981, 1984, 1987 and 1989. Data for Tower Hamlets are given in the table below. The estimates relate only to employees in employment; they exclude the self-employed and also members of Her Majesty's forces.
