To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what is the present number of unemployed males and females and the numbers recorded in May 1979; and what are his plans to reduce the figures.

In May 1979, on a seasonally adjusted basis, there were 49,800 male and 19,000 female unemployed claimants in Wales. In December 1990, these figures were 73,100 and 21,100 respectively. I refer the hon. Gentleman to the reply which my hon. Friend the Minister of State gave to the hon. Member for Clwyd, South-West (Mr. Jones) about the Government's plans to ameliorate the situation.

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what is the latest number of people out of work(a) in the Merthyr and Rhymney constituency and (b) in Wales; and what action he proposes to create new job opportunities for those unemployed.

In December 1990, there were 3,360 and 95,662 unemployed claimants in the Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney constituency and Wales respectively. I refer the hon. Gentleman to the reply which my hon. Friend the Minister of State gave to the hon. Member for Clwyd, South-West (Mr. Jones) about the Government's plans to ameliorate the situation.

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how many men and women, full-time and part-time, were in employment in June 1979 at the latest date for which figures are available in(a) Wales and (b) Mid Glamorgan.

The latest available figures show that there are more people in employment in Wales than ever before with a record 1,239,000 civilian work force in employment. In June 1979, there were 618,000, 250,000 and 165,000 male, full-time female and part-time female employees respectively in employment in Wales. A breakdown of numbers of full-time and part-time males is not available. By September 1990, totals were 525,000, 279,000 and 206,000 respectively. County data are not available for the period requested.
