§ Mr. Alfred MorrisTo ask the Secretary of State for Social Security if he will list the tables in the OPCS reports which indicate that people who need special diets will be likely to qualify for the lower care component of the disability living allowance; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Scott[holding answer 20 December 1990]: The estimates of the eligible populations for the new components of the disability living allowance were derived from a detailed secondary analysis of the OPCS survey data; the eligible groups cannot be identified from the tables published in the OPCS reports. Our estimates do, however, suggest that around a quarter of those expected to qualify for the lower rate of the self-care component —some 60,000 people in all—need a special diet.
