HC Deb 16 January 1991 vol 183 c513W
Mr. Tony Lloyd

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what advice he gives about the appointment of members of district health authorities; and whether he includes specific advice concerning the desirability of members residing in the area covered by the health authority to which they are appointed.

Mrs. Virginia Bottomley

It is for each regional health authority to decide on the appointment of members to district health authorities within its area. Guidance issued to health authorities in July 1990 specifies that it is preferable for members to live or work in, or have connections with, the community served.

Mr. Tony Lloyd

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what information he has about the number of health authority members who live in the health authority area for each authority in the North Western health region.

Mrs. Virginia Bottomley

The information is not available centrally. Responsibility for appointing non-executive members of district health authorities rests with regional health authorities. The hon. Member may wish to contact Mr. Bruce Martin, the chairman of the North Western regional health authority, for details.
