Mr. Austin Mitchell

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what are the balance of payments deficit or surplus for(a) manufacturers, (b) semi-manufacturers, (c) services, (d) consumer goods, (e) raw materials, (f) machinery and (g) invisibles for 1987, 1988, 1989 and 1990.

The information, where available, can be found in the "Monthly Review of External Trade Statistics", available in the Library of the House, or on the Central Statistical Office database, which may also be accessed through the Library.

Mr. Worthington

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the balance of payments surplus or deficit for invisibles for each year since 1979.

Mr. Mellor

Information relating to the surplus or deficit for invisibles can be found in table 1.3 of the 1990 edition of the CSO's United Kingdom balance of payments publication—the Pink Book—and in table B of the CSO's quarterly balance of payments press notice. Copies of both are available in the Library of the House or alternatively the data can be found on the CSO database which can be accessed through the Library.
