HL Deb 15 January 1991 vol 524 c75WA
The Marquess of Ailesbury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

On what basis Mr. Salman Rushdie has been contributing to the costs of his personal security, and what was the date of the first such contribution.

Lord Reay

Mr. Rushdie's life has been threatened in a way which entitles him, like any British citizen, to request protection, and the police have taken the action they consider appropriate in the light of the threat and all other circumstances. Any arrangements that may have been made between Mr. Rushdie and the police in respect of the costs of protection are a matter for Mr. Rushdie and the police.
