To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many hill farmers there are in Scotland on a county by county basis for the latest available date.

The Scottish Office Agriculture and Fisheries Department does not collect information directly on the numbers of hill farmers in Scotland but does collect data on the numbers of holdings within the less favoured areas, which include the main hill areas. The holdings information, including an estimate for minor holdings, at June 1990 is as shown in the table.
