(2) what percentage of overall costs in repairs to motorways, trunk roads and major road bridges in (a) England and (b) Wales was accounted for by remedial work undertaken to counteract the effects of concrete cancer on those roads and bridges;
(3) what are the estimated costs (a) in England and (b) Wales of undertaking remedial work to counteract the effects of concrete cancer on structures associated with motorways, trunk roads and major road bridges in 1990–91, 1991–92 and 1992–93.
§ Mr. ChopeAllocations of funds to my Department's agents for the structural maintenance of motorways and trunk roads (including bridges) in England are:

The Department has a comprehensive 15-year programme for the rehabilitation of structures on motorways and all-purpose trunk roads in England. Within this programme, some £1.5 million has been allocated in each of the years 1990–91, 1991–92 and 416W 1992–93 to deal with problems caused by alkali-silica reaction, or concrete cancer. This represents 0.36 per cent., 0.34 per cent. and 0.34 per cent. of total capital maintenance allocations respectively.
Allocations for roads in Wales are the responsibility of my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Wales.
