To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he plans to increase the level of grants agreed for capital expenditure at aided schools.

Mr. Fallon

Capital grants to aided schools have almost doubled in real terms since 1978–79. The following table shows the level of grant available for capital expenditure, excluding repairs, in cash terms for the last five years.

My right hon. and learned Friend hopes to continue increasing the level of funds available for capital expenditure at aided schools subject to the constraints of overall policy on public expenditure.
