§ Mr. McLoughlinThe Secretary of State oversees the development of policies on environmental matters in transport. In 1989 the Department set up a transport policy unit; one key objective for the unit was to co-ordinate policy advice on environmental issues, including the follow-up to the Environment White Paper. The unit reports to a steering group chaired by the permanent secretary and has a staff of 10. Environmental issues have long concerned the Department and resources have been allocated to tackling environmental problems by such means as vehicle regulation and the better design of roads. The total manpower and resources used to support environmental aspects of transport policies and programmes cannot be separately identified.
