§ Mr. BatisteTo ask the Secretary of State for Transport what measures he proposes to take to ensure that penalties for the offence of failure to provide information under the Road Traffic Bill take account of the different circumstances of companies and individuals.
§ Mr. ChopeCompanies should have the same responsibility to provide information about drivers alleged to be guilty of road traffic offences as a private individual and it is right that a negligent director or other officer should share in that responsibility. Licence endorsement is not appropriate, however, where the connection with driving is remote. I shall today be tabling an amendment at the Report stage of the Road Traffic Bill to provide that in these cases the penalty should be restricted to a financial penalty.
