§ Mr. HinchliffeTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) what proportion of waste incinerated within Scotland is imported; and what are projected levels of such importation for the next decade;
(2) in what quantities per nation annually European toxic waste has been imported by Scotland for each year since 1979;
(3) what quantity of waste, in the last year for which figures are available, was imported for direct landfill within Scotland.
§ Lord James Douglas-HamiltonVery little, if any, of the waste incinerated in Scotland is imported. On the basis of current information it seems unlikely that this will change significantly in the next decade.
Imports from Europe of hazardous waste, as defined in the Transfrontier Shipment of Hazardous Waste Regulations 1988, were 453 tonnes in 1988 and 480 tonnes in 1989. Virtually all of this waste was imported from Eire for recycling. There have been no reports of hazardous waste under the regulations being imported for direct landfill.
