To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many prohibition notices were issued against employers in 1989–90 relating to the control of noise at work for each of the geographical areas of, respectively, the factory inspectorate, the mines and quarries inspectorate, the agricultural inspectorate and the railways inspectorate.

The following prohibition notices were issued by the factory inspectorate1 during the period 1989–90.

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment how many prosecutions were taken against employers in 1989–90 relating to the control of noise at work for each of the geographical areas of, respectively, the factory inspectorate, the mines and quarries inspectorate, the agricultural inspectorate and railways inspectorate; and what were the penalties in each case.

Mr. Forth

One information was laid in the period 1989–90 in respect of noise-related offences: This was taken by the factory inspectorate1 in the west and north Yorkshire area. It resulted in a conviction with a fine of £1,800.

1 No proceedings were instituted for noise related offences by the Health and Safety Executive's agricultural inspectorate, and mines and quarries inspectorate, or by the railway inspectorate during the period 1989–90.
