HC Deb 06 February 1991 vol 185 cc169-70W
Mr. Ward

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport whether agreement has yet been reached on the provision of a weighbridge at Coquelles in France, in connection with weight controls on lorries arriving in the United Kingdom via the channel tunnel.

Mr. Chope

Eurotunnel propose to install a weigh-bridge in the freight terminal at Coquelles. Discussions are continuing with Eurotunnel about United Kingdom enforcement staff using the weighing facility for checking lorry weights prior to vehicles being loaded on to the rail cars and travelling to the United Kingdom.

Mr. Janman

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will place in the Library a copy of British Rail's preferred geographical route for the channel tunnel high speed rail link, indicating on it where the route deviates from his preferred route; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Freeman

British Rail is still studying the options for a route for the rail link, and do not expect to reach their conclusions until the spring. My right hon. and learned Friend has not expressed any preference as to route. But he has issued initial safeguarding directions for the section between Cheriton and Upper Hailing in Kent of the route announced by BR in 1989.
