HC Deb 04 February 1991 vol 185 cc7-8W
Mr. Alfred Morris

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is his latest estimate of the effects of his interest rate policy on employment.

Mr. Norman Lamont

[holding answer 31 January 1991]: Interest rates are maintained at a level to bear down on inflation and keep sterling within its ERM bands. The defeat of inflation is essential for economic prosperity and sustained high employment.
