22. Mr. Harry Greenway

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how much was spent on procuring additional horses for ceremonial purposes during the past year; from which sources the horses were procured; and if he will make a statement.

A total of £170,000 was spent in 1990–91 on horses purchased from the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. About 55 horses are purchased each year to replace those which are retired from active duty.
