To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will provide details on the number of fatal accidents involving motor vehicles driven by police in the course of their duties for the most recent 12-month periods for which statistics are available.

In the year ending 31 December 1990 outside the Metropolitan police district there were 17 civilian fatalities. These fatalities arose in the course of either police pursuits or responses to emergency calls. The figures do not show the number of accidents in which fatalities occurred.

In the same period in the Metropolitan police district there were six civilian and one police officer fatalities.
