HC Deb 11 December 1991 vol 200 c472W
Mr. Frank Field

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence in what year he gave the first estimate for the Trident Faslane facility; what the latest estimated cost is; and what is the difference from the cost originally announced in both real and money terms.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

On 10 May 1985, the cost of the Trident-related works programme at Clyde submarine base, Faslane was first estimated at £210 million at 1984–85 prices, of which £84 million was directly attributable to Trident. The cost estimate this year for the latter element is £176 million with future costs at 1990–91 prices, but past expenditure not revalued. A precise comparison between figures is not possible without disproportionate effort and cost.
