To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will publish the latest figures for the number and proportion of children in families on income support who are not taking up their entitlement to free school meals(a) in primary schools, (b) in secondary schools and (c) in special schools.

This information is not available in the form requested. In May 1990, a total of 1,010,815 children aged between five and 16 were in families in England receiving income support. A total of 764,611 free meals were taken in maintained primary—including nursery—secondary and special schools in England on the school meal census date in January 1990.
