HC Deb 10 December 1991 vol 200 c416W
Mr. Butcher

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what representations he has received in favour of a Christian conscience clause which would permit parents with deeply held religious beliefs to withdraw their children from classes dealing with AIDS/HIV.

Mr. Atkins

My right hon. Friend has received a large number of representations from minority religious groups, seeking a right for parents to withdraw their children from the proposed new requirement of national curriculum science that pupils aged 11 to 14 shall extend their study of the way in which the healthy functioning of the human body may be affected by the human immunodeficiency virus.
