HC Deb 05 December 1991 vol 200 c213W
11. Dr. Kumar

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what new initiatives he is planning to prevent rises in crime.

Mr. John Patten

We shall continue to take vigorous action to combat crime and protect the public, by providing the police with the people and money they need; making sure they and the courts have the necessary powers to deal effectively with offenders; and by enhancing our substantial programme of crime prevention measures. But reducing crime is not only the responsibility of the Government, police and courts, families, schools, churches and many others have a role to play. We are exploring what more might be done to influence individuals, particularly the young, to respect each other, each other's property and the law of the land.

22. Mr. Nicholls

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what measures he proposes to take to tackle the roots of crime.

Mr. John Patten

We shall continue to pursue our wide-ranging policies to combat crime and protect the public. We are exploring what more could be done to influence people—particularly the young—to have consideration for others and respect for the law. We hope soon to be able to make known our proposals for taking this forward.
