To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security how many staff were involved in fraud investigation, inspection and enforcement in each section and each region for each kind of post during each month since September 1990; and what are the proposed changes to such staffing levels in each section and in each region for each type of post.

The number of staff employed investigating social security fraud is a matter for Mr. Michael Bichard, the chief executive of the Benefits Agency. Mr. Bichard will write to the hon. Member shortly and copies will be placed in the Library and the Public Information Office. His reply will include information provided by the chief executive of the Contributions Agency.
