HC Deb 04 December 1991 vol 200 c169W
19. Mr. Devlin

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what assistance his Department is giving to improve housing in Stockton-on-Tees and Middlesbrough.

Sir George Young

In the past five years my Department has provided housing assistance of £37 million to Stockton-on-Tees and £45 million to Middlesbrough through funding from the housing investment programme, estate action, the urban programme and the Housing Corporation.

In addition, Middlesbrough was successful this year in the competition for city challenge funds. This will provide a further £35 million for the authority in the next five years, a substantial proportion of which will be spent on housing-related projects.

Stockton, although not successful this year, will be invited to bid in the city challenge competition for 1992–93.
