Mr. Ashley

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what is the purpose of attendance allowance; and what other help is provided towards the additional costs incurred by disabled people as a result of their disability.

The purpose of attendance allowance is to help meet the extra costs of care and supervision for severely disabled people. A wide range of further benefits is available to disabled people according to their circumstances, including mobility allowance which is intended to help meet the extra costs of disabled people with mobility problems. From April 1992 mobility allowance and, for those becoming entitled before age 65, attendance allowance, will be replaced and significantly extended by the introduction of disability living allowance Attendance allowance will remain for the over-65s.
