HL Deb 30 April 1991 vol 528 c17WA
Baroness Hollis of Heigham

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will revise the law of treasure trove; and whether they consider that all items of gold and silver, and all associated finds of whatever material (for example the iron pot containing gold coins), should be subject to treasure trove law, irrespective of how or why they were deposited.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Social Security (Lord Henley)

There are no plans to revise the law on treasure trove.

Baroness Hollis of Heigham

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many coroners' inquests into treasure trove there have been in each year since 1970, what was the outcome in each case and what was the estimated value of each find involved.

Lord Henley

Information in the form requested is not collected centrally. A list of those finds which, since 1977, have resulted in payment of awards to finders of treasure trove in England and Wales has been placed in the Library. The bulk of the information was collected in a special exercise at the time of the 1987 review of Treasure Trove a copy of which is also in the Library.
