HC Deb 29 April 1991 vol 190 cc74-5W
Ms. Richardson

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will publish a table showing the expenditure per pupil on (i) books and (ii) equipment in(a) primary schools and (b) secondary schools in cash and real terms since 1976.

Mr. Fallon

Figures returned by local education authorities for spending on books and equipment separately need to be treated with caution because of differing local authority practices in classifying spending between the two items. The table therefore shows, for each year for which information is available, spending figures per pupil for books and equipment together as well as for books and equipment separately.

report of the home accident surveillance system has been placed in the House of Commons Library. Certain accidents must also be reported to the Health and Safety Executive under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1985.

The Government are concerned to ensure that children's playgrounds are as safe as possible. At this Department's request, the National Children's Play and Recreation Unit is preparing a booklet on playground safety for distribution to local authorities and other operators. A complementary departmental guidance booklet on school playgrounds and related safety issues is in preparation.
