§ Mr. Garel-JonesAreas of Community competence are defined by the Community treaties, as interpreted by the European Court of Justice. The extent of Community competence is one of the questions under discussion in the intergovernmental conference on political union. But my hon. Friend will not be surprised to hear that Her Majesty's Government are not convinced of the need for any significant extension of Community competence.
