To ask the Secretary of State for Health when nicotine chewing gum will be given pharmacist-only status; and if he will make a statement.

An order amending SI 1983 No. 1212, The Medicines (Products other than Veterinary Drugs) (Prescription Only) Order, was laid on 10 April and is due to come into operation on I May. This will give effect to changes in the legal status of a number of medicines, including allowing the 2mg strength of a nicotine chewing gum, licensed as an aid to smoking cessation, to be supplied from pharmacies without a precription.
