HC Deb 16 April 1991 vol 189 cc161-2W
Mr. Dewar

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will give a breakdown of the numbers of households in Scotland according to whether they contain one, two, three or more adults aged over 18 years and the percentage this represents in each category of the total number of households.

Mr. Lang

[holding answer 15 April 1991]: The available information gives the number of persons aged 16 and over rather than over 18 years old in the household. Estimates of the numbers of households containing one, two, three and four or more persons aged 16 and over (either living alone or with children under the age of 16) in Scotland are given in the following table.

Estimated number of households in 1991 containing: Number ('000s) Per cent of total house-holds
1 person aged 16 and over 583 29
2 persons aged 16 and over 1,005 50
3 persons aged 16 and over 281 14
4 persons aged 16 and over 141 7

Mr. Dewar

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland (1) what is the latest available estimate of the number of households in Scotland which consist of one adult only and of the likely number in five, 10 and 20 years' time, respectively;

(2) what is his latest available estimate of the number of households in Scotland and of the number in five, 10 and 20 years' time, respectively.

Mr. Lang

[holding answer 15 April 1991]: Projections of the numbers of households in Scotland are at present available for the years to 2005 only. Figures for that year and the others requested are set out in the following table. Projections of the numbers of households consisting of one adult rather than one person are not available.

1991 2,009,330 535,770
1996 2,072,750 589,680
2001 2,111,070 638,140
2005 2,134,760 676,180
